, breaking news in an unprecedented, shocking move. republicans have filibustered a final vote on chuck hagel, president obama's pick to head the defense department. just four republicans join 54 democrats to support a vote on the nomination. now, you mugs know this is the first time in american history that a defense secretary nominee has been filibustered. forced to clear a 60 vote threshold. the president himself responded just minutes ago. >> chuck hagel, who, by the way, was a member of the republican caucus, a colleague of all of these folks who the republican leader mitch mcconnell and others consistently praised when he was still in the senate, has two purple stars -- two purple hearts, was an extraordinary soldier, was the head of the u.s.o., served on the senate floor relations committee. he is imminently qualified to be secretary of defense. and the notion that we would see an unprecedented filibuster, just about unprecedented. we've never had a secretary of defense filibustered before. there's nothing in the constitution that says that somebody should get 60 votes. the republican

this afternoon the president was thrown a curveball. he thought his secretary of defense nominee chuck hagel would be confirmed. but abc's chief white house correspondent tells us it didn't happen. what did? >> reporter: today was the day the president hoped he would have a new secretary of defense, but republicans blocked a straight up or down vote on his nomination. they don't like him for a lot of reasons, but their complaint today was he didn't turn over enough information on his financial disclosure forms. the white house is calling the delay uncon shonable and the president has said, it's unfortunate this kind of politics in truth, when i'm presiding over a war in afghanistan and i need say secretary of defense. it's a delay and setback for the president, but it's not a defeat. even hagel's strongest critic in the senate, john mccain, says that he believes hagel 8 be confirmed, just not quite as soon as the president hoped. >> still the nation waiting for a big appointment. thanks so much. >>> still ahead on "world news," all of us on this planet are about to see a close encounter. wha

that republicans in the senate are using right now to try to stop chuck hagel from being confirmed as our nation's next defense secretary. no cabinet nominee has ever been filibustered in the history of our country. it take ss a majority vote to confirm someone the president wants in his cabinet no one has ever tried to filibuster that before. it has never happened. even though a bunch of republican senators do not want chuck hagel to be defense secretary, they have insisted they would never filibuster him, because of course that would be unprecedented. you don't filibuster cabinet nominees. john mccain said that. lindsey graham said that. they doan like him, but they would not filibuster him. now they are filibustering him any way. those two senators and james inhofe from oklahoma say they will force a 60-vote super majority threshold for confirming chuck hagel for the first time in america for any cabinet nominee. and that is a filibuster. but they are insisting that nobody call it a filibuster, because, of course, they said they wouldn't do that. they are filibustering a cabinet nominee for t
